Have A real person Do your bookkeeping
We keep your books accurate and current, then sit down with you until the numbers make sense.
Family owned since 2018 · QuickBooks Certified · US based · HIPAA compliant with signed BAAs
A real person doing your bookkeeping
You can hand your books over to AI or some other software but what you can’t do is ask the questions that will help make sense of the numbers.
Grow the Books is a family owned bookkeeping firm. We've been doing this since 2018, for therapists, medical and allied health practices, product based businesses, and small business owners across the United States. You get an actual bookkeeper who knows your name and your business, and who will sit with you and walk through what your numbers mean until you are clear about what they mean.
We don't outsource overseas and you won't be handed to an AI chat bot either. Every one of our bookkeepers is in the US, background checked, and QuickBooks Certified.
You are more than just a business
To us, you're a person with a life, a vision, and an impact. We get to know every business we work with and when we notice a big change in your accounts, we don't just tally it up and drop it in a report at the end of the month; we have a conversation with you, so you stay in control of your growth.
We're small business owners too. We know what good bookkeeping does, not just for your bottom line but for your peace of mind. We're here to help you:
Stay organized with accurate monthly records
Understand where your money is going, and why it matters
Plan confidently for taxes and growth
Free up your time to focus on what you do best
No amount of automation can replace the relationship we have with you.
Money is one of the most vulnerable aspects about running a business.
I'm Greg Higdon. I've been in educator at heart my entire life. In 2003, after graduation from Pitzer College I started my career as a Latin teacher.
People are sometimes surprised that I went from conjugating verbs to reconciling accounts, but to me it's so similar. Teaching was never about knowing the answer but about staying with someone until they understood it themselves. That's still what I do because the books are the material and your confidence with clarity is the outcome.
I’ve watched first hand business owners who were excellent at their work and completely disconnected from their finances. Therapists who could hold the hardest hour of someone's week and then freeze in front of a profit and loss statement. Product based business that were excited to make sales, but then forgot to set the profit margin so that all their hard work paid off. Medical offices bleeding out because of billing snafus and struggling to keep track of all the expenses. That disconnect costs real money, and worse, it costs people their nerve. They put off decisions, underprice their work, and stay stuck.
So in 2018 I built a bookkeeping service around the idea that accurate books are the floor, not the ceiling. Getting the numbers right is the job and helping you understand them is the point.
Pictured with me, is my spouse Kelly Higdon, co-founder of zynnyme who also owns their own reiki and breathwork practice. They are the CMO of Grow the Books and they provide business consultation to our clients if they ever need additional support to growing their businesses.
What makes us different
Personal Support
You'll be assigned your own Quickbooks Certified bookkeeper, with a team behind them for accuracy and coverage. No, chatbots, ticket queues or rotating cast of people to help you. When you have a question, you email a person who already knows your business.
We use QuickBooks Online because it's the industry standard, which keeps your data portable and easy for your accountant to work with. But please know, the software is a tool we use, not the service.
We explain, we don't just report
Up to 4 times a year, we sit down with you and go through your books in plain language. We take our time with you to look at trends, where your money is actually going, and what that means for the decisions in front of you. If something unusual shows up in your accounts, we investigate with you, to understand what is happening so you can shift course if needed.
We review trends, projections, and expenses, which gives you CFO level insight without the CFO price tag.
We know your industry
We are specialized in working with therapists, practice owners, medical and allied health practices, product based businesses, and other service professionals.
This matters because the questions our clients have are industry specific. How to think about your caseload as revenue. What to do when insurance reimbursements land three months late. Whether to bring on a contractor or an employee. We've seen these situations many times, and we're not learning on your dime.
Every bookkeeper here is QuickBooks Certified
Every bookkeeper on our team holds QuickBooks certification, not just the founder, and we work in QuickBooks Online because it's the industry standard. Bookkeeping is an unlicensed field in most of the country, which means anyone can hang out a shingle. Certification isn't a guarantee of judgment, but it does mean the person handling your accounts has been tested on the software your business and your accountant both depend on.
We take privacy seriously
If you handle protected health information, we sign a Business Associate Agreement with you. Our team is trained on HIPAA compliance, every team member is background checked, and your data lives in encrypted, cloud based systems.

Common questions about working with us
If yours isn't here, ask it on a consult. There are no wrong questions about your own books.
Do I get an actual person, or is this automated bookkeeping?
You get an actual person. You're assigned a dedicated bookkeeper with a support team behind them, and you can reach them directly. We use software to work efficiently, but a human reviews your books, prepares your reports, and meets with you to go through them. We don't outsource overseas and we don't hand you to a chat bot.
My books are years behind. Is that too far gone?
No. Cleanup work is a large part of what we do. We go back through neglected records, reconstruct what happened, and bring your books current so you have an accurate picture of where your business stands today. You don't need to organize anything or explain yourself first.
Will you judge me for how bad my books are?
No, and we mean that. Falling behind is the most common reason people call us. Our job is to fix it, not to comment on it.
Are you QuickBooks certified?
Yes. Every bookkeeper on our team holds QuickBooks certification, not just the founder. We work in QuickBooks Online, so your records stay in the format your accountant already knows.
Do you work with my accountant?
Yes. We prepare accurate, tax ready books and coordinate with your CPA so filing is straightforward. If you don't have a CPA yet, we can tell you what to look for.
Are you HIPAA compliant?
Yes. We sign a Business Associate Agreement with clients who handle protected health information, and our team is trained on HIPAA requirements. Every team member is background checked.
Do you work with businesses outside my state?
Yes. We work virtually with clients across the United States. Everything runs through secure, cloud based systems and we meet by video.
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
More than half of our clients are therapists and private practice owners. We also work with medical and allied health practices, product based businesses and other service professionals.
What accounting software do you use?
QuickBooks Online. It's the industry standard, which keeps your data portable and easy for your accountant to work with.
How long has Grow the Books been in business?
Since 2018.
Still deciding? Book a free consult and ask us directly.
Let’s Grow Together
Your free consultation is a conversation where we'll ask about your business, look honestly at where your books are now, and tell you what we'd recommend, including if that recommendation is that you don't need us yet.
We'd love to take bookkeeping off your to-do list so you can get back to creating a business and a life you love.
